Religious and Spiritual Diverse Death, Dying, and Bereavement Practices (Fall)

The Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University and Ripple of Light Bereavement Resource Center, LLC are jointly offering 8, 3-credit CE courses for licensed social workers, and those holding a master's or doctoral degree in the profession. Attendees can complete each course as a stand alone CE offering, or participate in all 8 courses by the end of 2024 and earn an Advance Practice Certificate in Holistic Bereavement Care from the Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University and Ripple of Light Bereavement Resource Center, LLC.

Description:
Social workers increasingly encounter persons of diverse religious and spiritual association navigating life-threatening illnesses or a loved one’s death. Culturally competent bereavement practice requires that practitioners demonstrate understanding of religious/spiritual diverse end- of-life and death-related biopsychosocial assessment/treatment methods. This interactive course discusses the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu populations beliefs and practices. These populations form the basis of a small group case study of a practitioner engaging with a bereaved adult exploring their religiosity/spirituality following parental death.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the end-of-life and death-related beliefs/practices of four religious/spiritual populations.
2. Summarize personally one’s religious/spiritual perceptions of death, grief, and death-related practices.
3. Construct a case study of an interaction with a religious/spiritual diverse bereaved adult examining their religiosity/spirituality following parental dea
Instructional Methods:
Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and case study. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.
Relevance to Social Work Profession:
Participants will advance their knowledge of diverse religious/spiritual beliefs and practices surrounding death, self-awareness, and skills in religious/spiritual diverse bereaved adult biopsychosocial assessment/treatment.

Refunds and Cancellation Policy: Registration cancellation made by the registrant via email to bridgecenter@messiah.edu or through the registration system at least 10 business days prior to the course date will be eligible to receive a refund less $10 administration fee. Refund requests must include the name of the attendee and course name, date. Cancellations received less than 10 business days before the course will not be eligible for a refund. Registered no-shows are not eligible for a refund.
