Description:

Grieving the death of someone loved is an individualized journey extending beyond Kubler- Ross’ stage-based notion. Ethical social work practice entails practitioners holding an understanding of forefront approaches to grief treatment and best practice strategies for ethically integrating religiosity/spirituality exploration into assessment/treatment. This interactive course explores three contemporary approaches relevant to adult service delivery. The best practice strategies and theories form the basis of a small group role-play of a practitioner engaging with an individual exploring their religiosity/spirituality following the death of a spouse, sibling, or child.

Meets ethics CE requirement.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the relevance of understanding contemporary grief approaches to ethical practice.

2. Compare and contrast three contemporary grief theories in connection with a bereaved individual examining a religious/spiritual matter.

3. Apply the contemporary grief theories and ethical guidelines on integrating religious/spiritually into practice through a small group role-play.

Instructional Methods:

Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and role-play. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Profession:

Participants will enhance their grief competence, knowledge of its 40-year historical and theoretical evolution, and skills in applying three contemporary approaches to holistic and ethical practice.
