Traumatic Loss and Prolonged Grief Disorder (Fall)

The Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University and Ripple of Light Bereavement Resource Center, LLC are jointly offering 8, 3-credit CE courses for licensed social workers, and those holding a master's or doctoral degree in the profession. Attendees can complete each course as a stand alone CE offering, or participate in all 8 courses by the end of 2024 and earn an Advance Practice Certificate in Holistic Bereavement Care from the Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University and Ripple of Light Bereavement Resource Center, LLC.

Description:

Traumatic forms of death, including suicide, homicide, and natural disaster shake the foundation of survivors’ lives. This course examines the latest research in traumatic loss and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in connection with religiosity/spirituality exploration in bereavement practice. The knowledge and skill advancement opportunity includes practical strategies for integrating religion/spirituality exploration and the dual process model into cognitive behavioral therapy for PGD. In applying the strategies to practice, the course includes a small group role-play of a practitioner engaging with an individual examining their religious/spiritual beliefs following a child or spousal death.

Learning Objectives:

1. Differentiate between normal manifestations of grief, traumatic loss, and prolonged grief disorder.

2. Analyze the dual process model in connection with cognitive behavioral therapy for PGD and integrating religion/spirituality exploration into assessment/treatment.

3. Illustrate application of the model and religious/spiritual assessment/treatment through a small group role-play with an adult survivor.

Instructional Methods:

Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and role-play. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Practice:

Participants will advance their understanding of grief/loss terminology, latest grief treatment approaches for adults with prolonged grief disorder, and skills ethically integrating religion/spirituality exploration into bereavement practice.

Refund requests must include the name of the attendee and course name, date. Cancellations received less than 10 business days before the course will not be eligible for a refund. Registered no-shows are not eligible for a refund.
