The Role of a Religious and Spiritual Community in the Well-Being of Bereaved Older Adults (Fall)

The Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University and Ripple of Light Bereavement Resource Center, LLC are jointly offering 8, 3-credit CE courses for licensed social workers, and those holding a master's or doctoral degree in the profession. Attendees can complete each course as a stand alone CE offering, or participate in all 8 courses by the end of 2024 and earn an Advance Practice Certificate in Holistic Bereavement Care from the Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University and Ripple of Light Bereavement Resource Center, LLC.

Description:

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates by 2034 persons over the age of 65 will outnumber those under 18 in the United States. This interactive course discusses the role of a religious/spiritual community in the biopsychosocial assessment/treatment of older adults coping with four population-specific death-related losses. Drawing on the dual process model and grief literacy initiative, the knowledge and skill advancement opportunity includes best practice strategies for empowering bereaved adults psychosocially and spiritually. The model and strategies form the basis of a small group case study of a practitioner guiding a religious/spiritual community in developing an initiative.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the normative biopsychosocial and spiritual manifestations of grief older adults encounter in navigating four population specific death-related losses.

2. Examine the role of religious/spiritual communities and the grief literacy movement in connection to bereaved older adult well-being advancement.

3. Develop a case study applying the dual process model and initiative to empowering of a religious/spiritual older adult community.

Instructional Methods:

Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and case study. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Profession:

Participants will develop an understanding of the grief literacy movement, its connection to empowering religious/spiritual communities in supporting bereaved older adults, and skills applying best practices in macro-level grief support development.

"NASW-PA Chapter is a co-sponsor of this workshop. 3 CEs will be awarded for completion of this course. NASW has been designated as a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education for social workers (Section 47.36), Marriage and Family Therapists (Section 48.36) and Professional Counselors (Section 49.36) by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors."

Refund requests must include the name of the attendee and course name, date. Cancellations received less than 10 business days before the course will not be eligible for a refund. Registered no-shows are not eligible for a refund.
