By the Bog of Cats

Written by Marina Carr
Directed by Daniel Inouye

"Loosely based on Euripides' tragedy Medea, this is the prophetic tale of Hester Swane, an Irish Traveller, who attempts to come to terms with a lifetime of abandonment in a world where all whom she has loved have discarded her. Set on the bleak, ghostly landscape of the Bog of Cats, this provocative drama discloses one woman's courageous attempts to lay claim to that which is hers, as her world is torn in two. Hester's long-term lover, Carthage Kilbride, with whom she has a seven-year-old daughter, is selling her "down the river" for the promise of land and wealth through a marriage with the local big farmer's daughter. In the final moments of the action, we witness a woman provoked beyond the limits of human endurance. By the Bog of Cats is a furious, uncompromising tale of greed and betrayal, of murder and profound self-sacrifice."

Description:

The nation’s ethnically diverse population is progressively becoming the rising majority. Social workers in various settings regularly encounter persons of multicultural dissent navigating life- threatening illnesses or the death of someone loved. Culturally competent bereavement practice necessitates practitioners hold an understanding of ethnically diverse religious/spiritual death- related practices. This interactive course examines the four prominent minority groups beliefs and customs in connection with the biopsychosocial assessment/treatment process. These groups form the basis of a small group case study of a practitioner engaging with a bereaved adult examining a religious/spiritual matter.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the death-related beliefs and practices of the four prominent minority groups.

2. Summarize personally one’s attitude towards death, grief expression, and death-related practices from a cultural perspective.

3. Construct a case study of an interaction with an ethnically diverse bereaved adult examining a religious/spiritual matter.

Instructional Methods:

Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and case study. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Profession:

Participants will advance their understanding of ethnically diverse adult patient/client death- related care practices, self-awareness, and demonstrate engagement strategies applicable to religious/spiritually sensitive bereavement practice.
