Before coming to Hillsdale, he taught at Valparaiso University and Goshen College, and was a high school theology teacher before that. What constitutes a good life is the central question that animates his scholarship and teaching. He is the author of Why Boredom Matters: Education, Leisure, and the Quest for a Meaningful Life (Cambridge University Press, 2022), among other publications. Dr. Gary is passionate about liberal education as foundational for the preparation of good teachers, wise parents, and thoughtful citizens, as it aims to cultivate prudence, compassion, and a Renaissance spirit.
