National and International Scholarships and Fellowships

Are you interested in exploring the world? Are you driven to learn and grow in your academic pursuits, even after you receive your undergraduate degree? The scholarships and fellowships listed on this page represent a selection of opportunities for promising students at Messiah to pursue research, service, and experiences abroad. Funding and work provided by these programs is competitive and draws in applications from individuals around the world.

Messiah students have competed for and receive many prestigious scholarships and fellowships, including Rhodes, Fulbright, Carnegie, and Truman fellowships.

Information sessions will occur in the Spring 2022 semester on:

  • For Humanities and Social Science Students: Tuesday, March 15th in Boyer 131 from 4:30-5:30PM

Rhodes

Rhodes Scholarships bring together outstanding students from around the world for a one-, two- or three-year period of study at Oxford University. There are 32 scholarships given each year to U.S. citizens, available to students in any academic field. Recipients of a Rhodes Scholarship receive full tuition plus stipend at Oxford University.  Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. A minimum 3.7 GPA is required to apply.  Applications must be submitted through Messiah University by August.  Deadline: September

Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. Applications must be submitted through Messiah University by August.  Deadline: early October.

Beinecke

The Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship is a merit- and need-based award of $34,000 for outstanding students planning to attain graduate degrees in the arts, humanities or social sciences.  Juniors who are U.S. citizens may apply.  Applications must be submitted through Messiah University by January

 

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

The Mitchell Scholarship

The Mitchell Scholars Program is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to 12 Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, accommodations, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. 

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The selection criteria are: outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, a commitment to improving the lives of others, a good fit between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate programme at Cambridge for which they are applying.
Application deadline: mid-October.

 

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Programs

The Jacob K. Javits Graduate Fellowships are awarded by the US Department of Education to support graduate students in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

 

Knight Hennessy

The Knight-Hennessy Scholarship is for 2 to 5 years of study leading to a graduate degree in any field at Stanford University.  Seniors, graduate students, and recent alumni within four years of earning their bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply. Applicants may be U.S. or non-U.S. citizens.

(Carnegie) James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Scholarship

Each year the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers 12-14 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors. Fellows serve as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates who are working on various Carnegie projects.  Presently these include: Democracy; Nuclear Policy; Energy and Climate; International Economics; Middle East Studies; South Asian Studies; South East Asian Studies; Asia Studies; Russian/Eurasian Studies.  Positions are full-time for one year. Junior fellows are currently paid a gross salary of $3,000.00 per month ($36,000 per year).
