Study Social Studies at a Christian University

History majors wishing to be certified for social studies teaching on the secondary level (grades 7–12) may do so by admission into the Teacher Education Program. In addition to the history major, students use their elective credits for supporting courses in economics, politics, psychology, geography, and education.

Graduates from Messiah’s History program can:

1. Comprehend significant ideas, people, events, and social phenomena that have contributed to the formation of United States, Western and World History

2. Demonstrate a historical understanding of causation, change and continuity

3. Interpret the array of primary sources relevant to different sub-fields of history

4. Understand the diverse methods and interpretive models employed in contemporary historical research

5. Understand the historiographical traditions important to the modern discipline of history

6. Write substantial research and analysis papers based on primary sources and contextualized in terms of relevant historiographical discussions

7. Manage the challenges and opportunities of teaching history within the secondary school social studies construct (for students pursuing social studies certification)

8. Conduct basic historical research and communicate research results and analysis in effective written communication
