Major specific information

The following is information to help students discover programs that may work well for specific majors. This does not mean these are the only program available to students in specific majors, rather, this can be used as a guide to help determine programs that may have viable options for each academic area.

Many of the courses offered in these program have already been evaluated by Messiah to determine if they will meet Messiah requirements; it may be helpful to check the Course Equivalency Database--which is maintained by the Registrar's Office--to see how how courses will transfer back to Messiah. Department of Theatre and Dance

Department of Art and Design

Art Education students should plan to study abroad during their sophomore years. Art Studio Majors should plan to study abroad during sophomore or junior year

  • Gordon in Orvieto (Italy): Italian language course, studio art courses, Renaissance cultural history course are available.
  • Temple Rome: Courses are available in “History of Art in Rome,” Galleries and Studios of Rome,” Sculpture,” “Painting,” Photography,” Printmaking,” and “Digital Imaging.”
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: Students take two one-on-one tutorials with Oxford professors, including art history courses such as “Egyptian Art and Architecture,” “Greek Sculpture, c.600-300 BC,” and “Nature and Art in the Renaissance".

Department of Education

Education majors may want to browse department sheets from other disciplines to explore programs that may offer courses in their academic concentrations.

Department of Human Development and Family Sciences

HDFS students should not plan to study abroad fall semester of their senior year. Students are strongly encouraged to choose courses that will meet general education requirements.

  • LCC International University: Students can take classes in family and social sciences such as “Human Development,” “Marriage and Family,” and “Parenting” as well as participate in internships.
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: Available tutorials include “Developmental Psychology” and “Individual Differences.”

Psychology

  • LCC International University: Students can take classes in psychology, including “Social Psychology,” “Abnormal Psychology,” and “Organizational Psychology.”
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: A variety of Psychology tutorials are available including, “Cognitive Neuroscience,” “Developmental Psychology,” Social Psychology,” and “Language and Cognition.”

Department of Social Work

Social Work students are encouraged to study abroad fall or spring of their junior year.

Biblical and Religious Studies

  • Jerusalem University College: Classes have included courses in Biblical Archaeology, Biblical and Modern Hebrew, as well as a core course “Physical Settings of the Bible.”
  • LCC International University: Classes have included Biblical Interpretation, History of the Christianity, Introduction to Theology, Major Christian Thinkers, and Peacemaking and Justice.
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: A variety of tutorials are available including, Religions in the Greek and Roman World, Development of Doctrine in the Early Church, Augustine, The Gospels and Jesus, and Old Testament Archaeology.

Department of Communication

  • LCC International University: Classes have included Business Communication, International Marketing, Journalistic Writing, and Organizational Communication.
  • London Internship Program: Internships are offered in a variety of areas, including media and public relations.

English

History

History majors should plan to take at least one history course when studying off campus.History majors should avoid planning to study off campus during the fall semester of their sophomore or junior years. HSST majors should plan to study off campus either the spring semester of their sophomore or junior years and should work closely with their academic advisors.

  • London Internship Program: Courses include History of Modern Britain, Historic London, and the English Legal System.  Internships are offered in a variety of areas.
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: Students take two one-on-one tutorials with Oxford professors; a variety of history courses are available.
  • Temple Rome: Course options include Roman History and Rome and Italy from the Renaissance to the Present.

Modern Languages

There are also opportunities for intensive language study at Uganda Studies Program in Kampala, Uganda.

Department of Peace and Conflict Studies

Philosophy

Philosophy majors are strongly advised to avoid planning to study off campus during the fall semester of their senior year.

  • LCC International University: Courses include “Introduction to Philosophy” and “Moral Philosophy.”
  • Oxford Study Abroad Programme: A variety of politics tutorials are available, including the History of Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, and Modern British Philosophy.
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: A variety of tutorials are available including, The Philosophy of Kant, Philosophy of Science and Social Science, and Medieval Philosophy.

Politics and International Relations

  • London Internship Program: Internships are offered in a variety of areas, including with members of Parliament.
  • Oxford Study Abroad Programme: A variety of politics tutorials are available, including, Foundations of Modern Social and Political Thought, British Politics and Government Since 1880, and International Relations.
  • Scholars’ Semester in Oxford: A variety of tutorials are available including, Nationalism, Politics and Culture in Ireland, Theories of State, and Cicero: Politics and Thought in the Late Republic.

Off-Campus Programs - School of Science, Engineering and Health

Students study in May or over the summer.    

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Computer and Information Sciences

Department of Engineering

Typically the only time Engineering majors can participate in semester-long, off-campus programs is during the first (fall) semester of their sophomore year. Please work with your academics advisor as soon as possible to develop a plan to study off campus.

Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science

Due to required professional course work in the junior and senior years, Nutrition and Dietetics and Nutrition Science majors who wish to spend a semester abroad should plan to do so during their sophomore year. Check with your advisor to determine which semester will best fit your academic schedule.

Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics

The ideal semester to study off campus for most students in Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics Department, is either spring semester sophomore year or fall semester junior year. Math Education majors and Physics Educations major should plan to study off campus the spring semester of their sophomore year.

Department of Nursing

  • Baltimore Urban Studies
  • LCC International University: The university offers courses that may fulfill general education requirements: history, literature, Bible, Social sciences. Additionally, opportunities are available for students to be involved in service projects.
  • Uganda Studies Program: Students will participate in service projects in orphanages and medical clinics. Students can enroll in the Global Health track which allow students to participate in a Global Health Practicum.
