8. Ethics and the Common Good
Ethics and the Common Good requirement includes one topical, interdisciplinary course with some common content.
- Requirement: One three-credit interdisciplinary Ethics and the Common Good course.
- Level: 300
- Sequence: Recommended for any semester during the third or fourth year.
- Course Proposal: One course appropriate to the course learning objectives and level designation is proposed by faculty with expertise in ethics and civic responsibility, approved by General Education Committee.
Ethics and the Common Good Course Objectives
By the completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to:
- Summarize a variety of approaches to Christian theological/philosophical ethical reasoning and related methodological issues. (Ethics and Civic Responsibility)
- Apply ethical perspectives to ethical issues of significance in the contemporary world. (Ethics and Civic Responsibility)
- State an ethical position, discuss strengths and weaknesses of that position, effectively defend that position. (Critical and Creative Thinking)
- Describe the biblical mandate to work for the common good. (Christian Faith)
- Reflect on one’s own influence within society and agency to act within the publics to which we belong, including rights and responsibilities of digital citizenship and issues of access disparity. (Ethics and Civic Responsibility)
