5.  Oral Communication 

Oral communication includes one common three-credit course in oral communication.

Oral Communication Course Objectives

  • Requirements: One three-credit COMM 105 Fundamentals of Oral Communication course.
  • Level: 100
  • Sequence: Recommended for either semester of the first year.  
  • Course Proposal: One course appropriate to the course learning objectives and level designation is proposed by faculty in department with disciplinary expertise in oral communication, approved by General Education Committee and Curriculum Committee, and reported to the Community of Educators for information and review. 

By the completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Ethically locate, evaluate, and manage credible, effective, diverse information sources. (Critical and Creative Thinking)
  2. Make an argument by incorporating, analyzing, and engaging evidence. (Critical and Creative Thinking)
  3. Demonstrate rhetorical flexibility, including awareness of context, audience, purpose, genre, and conventions across diverse speech situations. (Communication)
  4. Apply visual communication and technology skills to explain important points. (Communication)
  5. Apply elements of effective interpersonal and group communication, such as listening, empathy, feedback, and addressing conflict. (Communication)
