9. Intercultural Perspectives

9.4 International Cross-Cultural Course

One three-credit international travel course providing opportunities to engage experientially with target culture outside of the United States. 

  • Requirement: One three-credit international cross-cultural travel course providing opportunities 
  • Level: 300
  • Sequence: Recommended for any semester during the third or fourth year.
  • Course Proposal: One course appropriate to the course learning objectives and level designation is proposed by faculty with expertise in cultural intelligence, approved by General Education Committee and Curriculum Committee, and reported to the Community of Educators for information and review. 

International Cross-Cultural Course Objectives

By the completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Articulate awareness of one’s own cultural identity and biases. (Inclusive Excellence)
  2. Describe elements of culture different from one’s own in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices, evaluating similarities and differences. (Inclusive Excellence)
  3. Ask complex questions about other cultures, seeking out and articulating answers that reflect multiple cultural perspectives. (Inclusive Excellence)
  4. Initiate interactions with members of the culture, suspending judgment and adapting and interacting across differences, and interpret intercultural experience from one’s own perspectives and the perspective of a member of the culture. (Inclusive Excellence)
