13. Common Learning Requirements

13.1 ELI

ELI is Messiah’s experiential learning initiative and fulfills a goal from the 2012-2016 institutional strategic plan for all students to participate in experiential learning that is designed to advance their professional development and understanding of community engagement. ELI-approved experiences are available in the following areas: Internships/Practica, Service Learning, Leadership, Off-Campus Programs and Undergraduate Research. All students must complete at least one ELI experience and demonstrate proficient performance on the common ELI rubric. ELI Course Objectives. By the completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Set a personal goal, track one’s progress, and follow it through to completion. (Self-Awareness)
  2. Exhibit professional skills such as time management and self-presentation, in person and online. (Self-Awareness)
  3. Articulate skills gained through the ELI experience transferable to a professional context (Self-Awareness)
  4. Describe the meaning of community and identify ways to engage in/contribute to community in the future. (Ethics and Civic Responsibility)
